Chapter 10

It took Janet and Edward a few minutes to find the car that was waiting for them. It drove them back to the hotel.

“Let’s get a drink before we go up,” Edward suggested as they entered the building.

“That sounds good. I didn’t drink much on the cruise. I didn’t see much, either.”

“We’ll book another one for next week,” Edward promised as he pulled open the door to the bar.

They took two steps inside before Edward’s phone rang. He pulled it out and frowned at it. “Ms. Thomas,” he said.

“Don’t answer it,” Janet suggested.

Edward sighed. “I need to answer it. We need to go upstairs.”

“You need to answer it. I don’t.”

Edward laughed. “I suppose that’s true.”

Janet sighed. “But I’ll come with you, because I love you.”

“Thank you.”

Edward tapped the answer button. “We’re in the bar. I’ll ring you back in five minutes,” he said. The reply made him frown.

“What did she say?”

“She said two minutes would be better.”

“Why is she being so difficult?”

“Maybe she has another job for us once we’ve finished this one.”

Janet shook her head. “I hope not. I want a holiday after this assignment.”

In their room, Edward gave Janet a kiss before he rang Ms. Thomas back.

“What happened?” she demanded.

“We did our best, but Kara’s companions are determined to stay with her at all times,” Edward said. “We had a plan for on the boat tonight, but then Kara felt ill and spent the entire cruise in a cabin with her mother.”

“Surely it would have been simple enough for Janet to offer to take the mother’s place for a short while.”

“I did offer,” Janet said. “Elena was determined to stay with her daughter at all times.”

“Take me through the entire day.”

Janet sat back and listened as Edward told Ms. Thomas everything that had happened during the day. When he was finished, Janet told her what had happened on the lower level of the ship during the cruise.

“So Kara was left alone when Elena came over to find Noreen,” Ms. Thomas said.

“Momentarily, yes, but Elena kept the door to my cabin open and one eye on Kara’s room until Noreen went across to sit with her sister,” Janet said.

“It was still a missed opportunity. Edward could have come down the stairs and gone into Kara’s room while you distracted Elena and Noreen.”

“Perhaps, but I doubt it,” Janet said. “Besides, I had the envelope.”

“That was poor planning on your part.”

Janet gasped.

“It seems far more likely that Janet will have a chance to be alone with Kara than I will,” Edward said.

“Except tonight you had a chance.”

“I don’t agree. As Janet said, Elena was standing in the doorway until Noreen went across to Kara’s room. There was no way I could have made my way into Kara’s room unseen.”

“I assume you have a better plan for tomorrow.”

“We’re going to Versailles. I’m arranging the transportation because everyone was a bit upset by the crowds that gathered to try to see Kara today.”

“Yes, it’s interesting that people are starting to show up wherever she goes.
